Moving to a New State in 2021: 3 Tips to Smooth the Process
By Julie DeLong, A-1 Freeman Moving Group
Honestly, it is a lot to handle. Luckily, there are a number of actions you can take beforehand to make the move to Houston less stressful than it could be otherwise.
3 Tips to Ease the Process of a State-to-State Move
Though the task may never be entirely stress-free, these three steps can help reduce your stress levels.
Tip 1: If possible, complete your paperwork in advance.
Moving always necessitates updating your permanent address. Critical documents, websites, and service providers will all need to be contacted. Taking care of these tasks beforehand will permit you to check this task off your list and concentrate more fully on your new residence when you get there.
If you relocate from state-to-state, however, you have the added responsibility of procuring a new driver's license in addition. Similar to the change of address policies, the majority of states have a set amount of time by which you must exchange your old license for a new one, so make sure that you confirm with your new state's DMV website to fully grasp the time period in which getting a new license will be required.
Some states mandate an in-person visit to the DMV, others let you to take care of the complete process online. Taking care of this task pre-move will help with the transition and free up important settling-in time in your new state of residence—especially during a pandemic, when threats of virus transmission complicate even the most basic matters.
Tip 2: Pack with both short-term and long-term trips in mind.
In one way, an interstate move is similar to a road trip and a move all together into one. Not only are you packing up all your earthly possessions for transport, but you're in addition preparing to spend at likely a day or two road-tripping to reach your new place.
Before you reach the very last stages of packing up, always be sure to take a few minutes to pack suitcases for yourself (and, if applicable, for your family members) that will include everything you will want for the next couple of days in route:
- Face masks and hand sanitizer
- Changes of clothes
- Toiletries
- Medications
- ID's and documentation
- Money
Also do not forget about your furry friends! Make sure they have several days' worth of supplies ready to go as well.
Tip 3: Pick an experienced interstate moving company in Houston.
All moving companies have specialties. While a few are great for local moves, others have built systems and structures to support interstate and cross-country moves. When vetting possible moving companies in Houston, always make sure to ask thoughtful questions about their abilities and areas of expertise. Be sure to read consumer reviews, reach out to friends and contacts and take their suggestions into consideration.
While it can be tempting just to choose the cheapest estimate you find after a fast Google search, we've all been around long enough to recognize that the least expensive offer is not always the wisest choice after all. If you're facing the anxiety of an interstate move, especially over the ongoing pandemic, you will appreciate knowing you are in good hands the whole time.
